Supporting our communities together
Municipalities across Ontario rely on MPAC to regularly assess and classify properties in their communities so that they can set property tax rates, and during COVID-19 we’ve found new ways to do that work without conducting on-site property inspections, like collaborating with municipalities to access digital building plans.
While new digital and curbside document exchanges have emerged to assist our work during the pandemic, there are still situations where an on-site property inspection provides us with the detail needed to make an accurate assessment.
As the Ontario government signalled a readiness to move to the next phase of re-opening, we prepared to resume property inspections gradually and safely. As of June 15, our inspectors began a return to exterior property inspections in the four communities served by our field offices in Kingston, Hamilton, Barrie and Timmins.
We have taken steps to protect our employees and customers by providing training, guidelines and personal protective equipment. Our work is limited to only exterior inspections at this time, and we will not be making contact with property or property owners.
As we undertake a gradual return to property inspections across the province, we’ll do what we’ve always done – consult and collaborate with our municipal partners to make sure we are taking the right approach. We are focused on safeguarding our communities while also delivering the accurate assessments municipalities need in order to collect taxes and focus on their recovery efforts.
